Hamilton - alpaca fingering
Hamilton - alpaca fingering
Alpaca yarn is an excellent choice for your knitting or crochet project. The yarn fibers are hollow like a human hair, making them very warm. The fiber contains no lanolin and the yarn is hypoallergenic. Alpaca yarn is a luxury yarn that comes in 22 naturally occurring colors, is durable yet extremely soft, easy to work with, has beautiful drape, and is an excellent choice for garments that touch the skin.
Our alpacas are not harmed in any way during the shearing process which removes their fiber. They do not like the process but are very happy when it is done. Think of it as an instant diet, with each adult losing 5-6 pounds of fiber, not to mention not having to wear a heavy coat as the weather turns warmer! Of this, about 2-3 pounds of fiber per animal is sent to the mill after skirting (removes vegetation, uncharacteristic fibers). The processing time at the mill is very long, usually six months or longer so the anticipation of getting our hands on the yarn really has time to build!
This yarn, from the fleece of Hamilton, is the result of the long journey that single source fiber takes from the farm to your knitting needles. And we are oh so happy with the result!
Hamilton’s fingering weight yarn is natural un-dyed brown. Each yarn tag includes a photo of Hamilton.
